new Orleans identities in motion

Working in New Orleans as a choreographer offers a unique blend of challenges and opportunities, particularly as an immigrant. The city’s rich cultural tapestry, infused with a vibrant mix of influences, provides an ideal backdrop for exploring movement and identity through dance. My latest venture, in collaboration with Lafitte National Park and the Kreyol Karavan, epitomizes this exploration, seeking to bridge cultural divides through the universal language of movement.

Embracing New Orleans' Cultural Landscape.

New Orleans is a fertile ground for a choreographer. The city’s history, steeped in African, French, Spanish, and Creole influences, creates a unique environment where diverse dance forms can flourish. To me, this diversity resonates with my multicultural background, providing both inspiration and a sense of belonging that is not necessarily given but found deep within oneself.

The Kreyol Karavan project is particularly significant in this context. Created by Cie La Mangrove, it delves into the intersections of music and dance. The project challenges conventional perceptions of Creole identity, celebrating our shared "creolity" and the common experiences of "métissage"—the mixing of cultures.

Taking over the project with Lafitte National Park represents an exciting next step in my journey as I delve into the historical and cultural narratives embedded within the landscape.
